The GIA Field app
Pending Upload and syncing
What happens to a visit or survey recorded with no reception, and how to get it up when you are back in range.
Where to find it
GIA Field Home Pending Upload
Everything you record on the app is written to the phone first and sent to the platform second. The waiting list of things still to be sent is Pending Upload, at the bottom of Home. The heading only appears when something is actually waiting, so an empty Home means everything is up.
You do not have to remember to send it. The app works through the list on its own when it has a connection: once after you sign in, and again each time you bring the app back to the front. Sync all is there for when you want to watch it happen.
Steps
- 1 Open Home. A visit you logged or planned names the business and shows its date. The other things that queue up — a planned visit you have just completed, a survey, a cancellation — carry a short standing label such as "Pending item" or a grower number instead of the business name, so read Pending Upload as how much is still sitting on the phone rather than a list of nurseries.
- 2 Get somewhere with signal — a bar is enough.
- 3 Select Sync all beside the Pending Upload heading, or Sync on a single row.
- 4 Watch the rows go. They are sent oldest first, and each one disappears from the list as the platform accepts it.
- 5 If a row reads "Sync failed" with a reason underneath, read the reason: it usually says the connection dropped.
- 6 Select Retry on that row to put it back in the queue and try again.
What you'll see
Rows disappear one at a time until Pending Upload disappears with them, and the In Progress chips on your visits clear. Your figures on Home catch up the next time the app fetches them, which happens when you sign in or bring the app back to the front with a connection.
- Nothing is thrown away on a failure. A row that will not go stays in the list with the reason attached, and the app keeps hold of the work until the platform accepts it.
- The app retries by itself for a while, waiting a little longer between attempts. After several failures it stops trying on its own and hands you the Retry button.
- A survey waits for its own visit. It is only sent once the visit it belongs to has been accepted, so a stuck visit holds its survey back too — send the visit and the survey follows.
- Sending the same row twice does not produce two visits. The platform recognises a repeat and keeps the one record, so Retry is always safe.
Important
Log Out empties the phone, including anything still under Pending Upload — work that has not been sent is gone, with no way to get it back. Always clear the list before you log out or hand the phone on.
Good to know
If a row still will not go after several tries and a good connection, tell your administrator what the reason says rather than logging the visit a second time. An In Progress chip only ever means "still on this phone" — it is nothing to do with the "In Progress" accreditation shown against a grower.
